Dear Dr

RE: THE DIAGNOSIS AND ASSESSMENT OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE IN PRIMARY CARE

On behaIf of [affiliation], I would like to invite you to chair a meeting entitled ‘The diagnosis and assessment of Alzheimer’s disease in primary care’ to be held at the XXXXX on XX XX XX.

At a special meeting of the International Psychogeriatric Association, Alzheimer’s Disease – Applied Diagnosis and Assessment Conference, held in Geneva in 1996, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) specialists from around the world met to discuss the role of the primary care physician (PCP) in the diagnosis of AD. At this conference it was re-affirmed that the PCP plays a crucial role in the early diagnosis and management of the disease.

Indeed, the PCP currently cares for the majority of patients with AD, either at home or in long-stay nursing homes. The PCP is in an excellent position to diagnose and manage AD within the community. The challenge is to initiate early diagnosis of the disease.

To support this, the meeting will examine practical approaches to diagnosing AD, and review the assessment tools that can be employed in the evaluation of the disease in the primary care setting. In addition, an algorithm for the management of AD will be presented, which may be used to discuss the generation of a local strategy based on the national approach to the illness.

In recognition of your participation in the meeting, an honorarium of [ ] will be made available to you. In addition any travel costs you incur will be reimbursed.

I very much look forward to hearing from you and, hopefully, working with you. Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely
