International Psychogeriatrics

Helen Fung-kum Chiu

by Helen Fung-Kum Chiu

It is with great pleasure that I inform you of the progress of our journal, International Psychogeriatrics. You have probably already seen one of the most visible recent changes of the Journal – new cover design and new A4 format. However, you may not be aware that the Journal is being enhanced and improved in many other ways of note. In the past few years, our journal has received so many quality submissions that we were able to increase the number of issues from four to six per year. Further, the quality has also prompted the Journal to be cited more in the literature so this has resulted in its impact factor rising. Credit and appreciation must be given to our Editor - David Ames, and Deputy Editors - John O’Brien and Nicola Lautenschlager who have provided outstanding leadership on the Journal. We must also thank their hard working editorial panel and group of reviewers for their contributions; I only regret there are too many people to name in this short article. Finally, our publisher, Cambridge University Press (CUP), has also done a wonderful job. Individually and collectively, this team has advanced this publication tremendously and, on behalf of IPA, I extend sincere appreciation and recognition for their efforts. What is exciting to tell you is plans are in place to take the Journal and IPA even farther.

Just recently, IPA has renewed our relationship with Cambridge University Press for another ten years … but not as your traditional publishing contract. In our new agreement, CUP will continue to publish and enhance our Journal. Plus, now as an IPA Corporate Partner, CUP will also collaborate with IPA to better create and disseminate educational material. Another benefit to IPA is the opportunity to gain greater visibility in the world by tapping CUP’s public relations / press network. Finally, the contract will also provide IPA with a guaranteed source of income over a longer term, support the targeted growth of the Journal, and indemnify IPA from unforeseen cost changes. We anticipate that the synergy between IPA and CUP will enable us to jointly provide better service to the association and to the field and advance care. The potential is exciting.

14th International Congress – Destination Montréal

Our next congress is fast approaching and I hope you are already making your plans to join IPA once again for an outstanding meeting. I would like to report on the progress of the Montréal Congress. The scientific program is of high caliber with a diverse array of topics and speakers. I would also like to draw your attention to some of the highlights apart from the main scientific program. The Mental Health Issues in Nursing Home Care Expert Meeting and site visits to long-term care facilities are very attractive for multidisciplinary heath care professionals. The Psychotherapy workshop and ECT workshop will be of great interest to delegates of the conference as well. Of particular note is the Worldwide Research Consortium meeting where key scientific leaders from various research networks will meet to discuss and coordinate projects in different regions of the world. And there are many more highlights --- just visit the IPA congress website. So please mark your diary for this outstanding conference and plan to come to Montréal. I look forward to seeing you soon.
