Dr. De Deyn is the Scientific Director of the Institute Born-Bunge at the University of Antwerp. He completed his medical training in neurology in Belgium and specializes in the fields of clinical neurology, neurochemistry and neuropharmacology. In 1989, he became Head of the Department of Neurochemistry and Behavior at the University of Antwerp followed by appointments in 1990, as Head of the Department of Neurology at the Academic Hospital in Middelheim, Belgium; in 1995, a professorship in Animal Laboratory Sciences and Behavioural Physiology followed by a professorship in Neurology and Behavioral Neurosciences. Since 1 October 2005, he has been in his current position.

Dr. De Deyn has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers on a variety of clinical and research issues in dementia, stroke, epilepsy, and metabolism, and has edited a series of academic volumes in these fields. During recent years, his main focus of research has been on neurodegenerative disorders including dementia and Parkinson’s disease, both on a pre-clinical (animal modeling) and clinical level. He is author of several monographs. His research interests also include functional neuroimaging and ethical issues related to the field of clinical neurosciences. He is a member of several international scientific societies and has editorial responsibilities for several peer-reviewed journals. He is Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery. In addition, he is Founder and Chairman of the Prize Frans Dille for promotion of graphic arts held in collaboration with the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp (cultural site included on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List).
