Sabine Bährer-Kohler is a holder of a Doctorate in Social Science (Dr. rer.soc) from the University of Tübingen, a Diploma in Education from the University of Education - Freiburg, and a Diploma in Social Work and Social Education from the Protestant University of Applied Sciences. She has held various positions as a social worker at the Psychiatric University Clinic Basel (UPKBS) in Switzerland and has also served as a Senior Researcher at the UPKBS in 2004 and Coordinator of a scientific EU project in 2007. Sabine Bährer-Kohler currently serves as a lecturer at the University of Wroclaw on health, ageing and self-management.

In 2000, Sabine Bährer-Kohler was awarded the Research Prize given by the University Clinic in Bologna, Italy. She is also a member of the Society for Women’s Psychiatric Health, the Swiss Alzheimer’s Society and the Swiss Society for Social Psychiatry.

Sabine Bährer-Kohler has been a member of IPA since 2001. She has served as chair of several symposia at IPA International Meetings in Rome (2002) and Istanbul (2007). As a newly-elected IPA Board of Directors member, she plans to emphasize the social sciences, social counseling and social work, focusing on preventive social factors and self-management.
