Dr. Laidlaw is Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology at the University of Edinburgh and Consultant Clinical Psychologist/Clinical Lead for Psychology Services for Older People in Edinburgh. In 2000-2001, he was a research fellow and visiting scholar with Professor A. T. Beck at the University of Philadelphia, USA and he has had long time collaboration with: Stanford University (California, United States) professors Larry Thompson and Dolores Gallagher-Thompson; as well as Professor Bob Knight at the University of Southern California (United States).

Dr. Laidlaw has published widely including: research looking at attitudes to ageing; recent papers on psychotherapy process issues in CBT; and a recent randomized controlled trial study of CBT for late-life depression. He has also authored a number of book chapters looking at CBT with older people. With Professors Larry Thompson and Dolores Gallagher-Thompson, he is the co-author of CBT with Older People (2003). With Professor Bob Knight he has co-edited a comprehensive handbook on emotional distress in later life. In collaboration with colleagues in the US and Australia, Dr. Laidlaw is working on a new practice guide for academics, clinicians and researchers working with older people. Dr. Laidlaw often provides workshops on CBT with older people and has done so recently in the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States and in China.
